About

7092a-wMary Maulsby has been a psychotherapist since 1988. She has worked in several agencies, but has concurrently maintained a private practice. Her specialties have included death and dying; bereavement; chronic illness; women’s issues; gay, lesbian and bisexual issues; personal ceremony; life transitions and personal growth. In 1996, she created SpiritWalks (see SpiritWalks tab).

Before she knew her true career calling, she free associated through many interesting jobs that seemed right at the time, such as veterinary technician, laboratory technician, chimpanzee nursery technician, construction assistant, real estate agent, tree planter, exercise instructor – too many to count really.

During a long term, life threatening illness, she found massage therapy and Psychosynthesis to be very helpful in treating her illness holistically. She then went to massage school, after which she became a Natural Therapeutics Specialist. After several years, this led her to her true calling as a psychotherapist.

She went back to school and got 2 Masters degrees, a two year training in Psychosynthesis as well as some very interesting Shamanic training.

As a naturalist, Mary’s love of, and deep connection with Nature, provides a perfect venue for using Nature as metaphor for people’s lives, assisting in their healing processes. Mary’s own spiritual journey and life experience give her an accepting presence that allows others to feel safe and comfortable when speaking their truths.

She is committed to growth, healing and understanding – personally, professionally and for the planet. She works as “guide” to assist clients in listening to their inner voice and empowering their own healing. Mary’s work is heart-centered.

She is also vice-president of Zeedyk Ecological Consulting, LLC, where she assists her wonderful husband with wetland and upland habitat restoration. They live on a creek on the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico.

Her hobbies include music, silk painting, hiking, walking in creeks, swimming with dolphins, whales, turtles and other sea creatures, creating habitat for wetland beings (in other words playing in the mud) and playing with her dog, Matilda Rose (Mattie).

Mary has been exquisitely blessed with, and  is deeply committed to her precious friends and family, and she strives to spend as much time with them as possible. Also of deep commitment to Mary is laughter, happiness, spiritual growth, meditation, Tibetan Tai Chi, health and making local changes concerning global problems, or as Catie Curtis sings, “If I can’t change the world, I’ll change the world within my reach. What better place to start but here and now with me and you. We are only passing through.”

  2. Hey, Mary! This is Katrin, Jessie’s Goddess-daughter. I LOVE your beautiful writing on the wonders of intimacy with nature. I can definitely relate to the mixture of joy & heartbreak too… Looking forward to reading more! I started writing this year too: my blog is about our inner-ecology cycles via the lens of Astrology (monthly horoscopes and occasional musings:) cosmicwaveastrology.com
Blessings of the autumn breeze to you!

  3. Mary, congratulations on this endeavor! It is very impressive. I look forward to your future blogs. I can’t wait to hear about your packrat parables as we have a nest of them under our hot tub! We have caught 3 over 3 different times in a live trap and move them about a mile away to a new home. The “crap” they bring around the tub to “protect?” their home is crazy! They found a plastic yellow ducky and a package of misquito bait near the tub and placed that at the edge of the tub. Lately, we have only found their poopies there so don’t know who is left underneath.
Wishing you the best. Linda Smarrella

    • Hi Linda! That is so funny! I look forward to writing about them. They have
done some pretty remarkable things around our place as well. I think they team up
with the Magpies to keep us guessing. I enjoy them a lot. I find myself wanting to
name them Templeton from Charlotte’s web! Thank you for commenting, Linda, and going through
the aggravation of technology to do so.

  6. Hi Mary! I just wanted to share this with you. I captured our beautiful orb weaver in the process of weaving. It’s just about 5 minutes, and the audio got lost, but we were just oooing and ahing.
I’m so thrilled to have gotten this. 🙂

    • Wow, this is great! So reminicent of my Charlotte! Isn’t she just beautiful?! I could never get a good picture of her. Always blurry being at night. I don’t know how to do all that fancy stuff.
I heard the whole audio. Very cute. So, that’s Mr. Q?
My spider wove a new one every night, unless she was shedding. Then she seemed pretty much dead for several days. Their blood pressure has to rise significantly to break the old shell, so they often don’t make it through. I saw her do it 3 times over 2 years. I could actually see her heart beating.
She would take the old one down by ingesting it through her mouth, I think, and pulling new silk out of her abdomen. Then if she caught a bug, she would pull out and wrap whole sheets of it around the bug.
I am glad you have yours to enjoy. My first one had a funny face design on her back. Another one had a cross. Does yours have a design per se or just sort of mottled?

  7. Hi Mary, glad I found your precious blog…and when I read your ABOUT, a little detail caught my eye: you’ve been a chimpanzee nursery technician. I wonder where? I ‘ve spent a little time in a ‘nursery’ of sorts, more a rehabilitation center for orphaned orangutans and it was one of the best times of my life. Primates are wonderful beings. I’ve seen some that have been abused and to different degrees crippled by humans (mental, psychological, physical) …. and when you see them in THEIR natural habitat, roaming around with grace, ease and in their own power, it’s such an impressive experience. So sad what humans can do to (other) beings. Thank you for respecting nature and restoring it.

    • Thank you for stopping by!! A kindred spirit, I can tell. Sadly, I worked with chimps in Alamogordo, NM – the famous nightmare for chimps. I wish I knew where some of mine ended up. I loved them, and found out the administrators only wanted that so that they(chimps) would be easy to handle and torture later. I’m sure a lot of them died. Still haunts me. That was in 1973.
So cool you worked with oranutans. Yes, primates are so wonderful. I loved watching their early development, and how close it is to human children. It is so hard to know what we do to each other and other species. It is hard to live with, you know? I can only focus on love. It’s the best way to counteract the negativity and fear, I think. Thanks again for coming by. I look forward to checking out your site!
      Peace,
      Mary

  8. Hi Mary, you left a string of likes on Beauty Along the Road, which brought me here. Just reading one story (Shadow Goddess of the Cactus Cave) told me many of the things you describe here on your About page. Our stories hold so much of ourselves 🙂

    • Maybe I should explain more – I am also a therapist (semi-retired). I also use nature and animals as metaphors for human qualities (and my own learning and insights). I see archetypes floating around here everywhere and I am feeling very much at home.

      • Hey Annette,
That is great we have that in common! A kindred spirit. I’m so glad you feel at home here. Thank you for the follow. I”m following you now too. I’m glad to have this new connection. This blogging community is so wonderful. I had no idea when I started blogging that this would happen. That deep friendships with people all over the world would be made.
So you live in Virginia. I grew up in Maryland. Beautiful states. You are much more a world traveler than I. I have traveled around in the states quite a bit, but have only been to Mexico, Scotland and New Zealand outside the US.
What kind of therapy do you do? You said you are semi-retired? Me too.
Thanks again for coming by and I look forward to more connection.
        Peace

      • Hey Mary – one of my favorite types of therapy was sandplay (here is a link describing it a bit: https://beautyalongtheroad.wordpress.com/2014/01/16/windows-into-the-inner-sanctum/ I enjoyed using different non-verbal, art or movement-linked modalities to go deeper than language. I took a break for a few years, re-tooled as a life coach. But it seems like I am being drawn back into things through some volunteer work with refugees. I lived in Silver Spring for many yrs and worked in DC before moving to VA.

      • Hey Annette,
Thank you for linking me to your post. I left a comment there. I love Sand Play. I went through one training, but the training was such a huge commitment over years, I just never followed through. It is such a great modality. I love how it circumvents the intellect, and the unconscious shows up with what needs to be healed. I love any kind of process like that. I use a series of questions that my clients draw. It’s just amazing what comes out. I like more experiential processes, as it sounds like you do as well. I like what you said, “re-tooled” as a life coach. I may go in that direction too.
Haha! Silver Spring. I lived in Sandy Spring for a while, working for a veterinarian there. I spent my senior year in high school (1970-71)at a boarding school there – Sandy Spring Friends School. Small world.
Wow, volunteer work with refugees! That sounds very interesting.
I am very glad to have this connection. I look forward to more interaction.
        Peace
        Mary

I think everyone has hard things in their lives. It is how we relate to each thing, and to ourselves during each thing that determines how we get through. I know everything shaped me and made me who I am now, so I am grateful for all the lessons, really.
I loved your zoo pictures, by the way.
I hope you get out in Nature often.
