Curves Around Here and There

Well now, I couldn’t not do the  WordPress Photo Challenge, Curves! Pretty much everything in Nature has them.

Our life path, with all its twists, turns and tangents was my first thought.  I know mine has been anything but straight, as I go off trail often. Some people sprint up the mountain in a determined, goal oriented fashion.  I have always enjoyed a more circuitous route, meandering around the hills, trusting I will return to the main road when the time is right, and to veer off once again.

How about you? Do you go for the top right away, to see the broader view early? Or do you wander from the beaten track? Do you find joy in the not knowing what comes next? Either way, I wish you joy in your journey. In everything is love, learning and growth.

If I am too short sighted on my way, I miss the wildness, the spontaneity and the adventure of it all.

Looking at this little beetle, and the black spots on blue, I am reminded of some probable judgements and negativity I still may hold. As I project my inner uncertainty onto him, he transfers that energy into the Earth, where it is transmuted into positive, useful vibrations for a Higher Good. He needs those beautiful spots to be attractive to a mate, and to blend in to his wooded habitat. The mirror is always there for us to look deeply into our hearts to see what still needs healing, and to notice our growth along the way.

Lizards don’t resist the rock, or argue with the reality of it. He surrenders to its shape, using its solidity, his tail curling along its surface.

Water, the life blood of the Mother flows around, over or through objects it comes upon, shaping the land with patient strength, giving sustenance to all.

In a recent post, Michael at Embracing Forever says

“I know uncertainty is like a little film of color that floats on a deep and abiding knowing.  It seems very massive, but it is more like a mirage.”

He continues with, “I’m thirsty because I’m walking through a desert mirage and I believe what I see sometimes, but it is the thirst that will lead me to water.”

I love their naturally wavy hair!

As we have our summer Solstice in the northern hemisphere, these flowers are going into hibernation like our winter, as are our friends in the southern hemisphere. It reminds me of the Yin and Yang symbol, and the small circles in the larger parts of the design. Everything is everywhere. This brings me faith and a certainty of the Divine, and a love for All That Is.

Happy Solstice everyone. See you around the next bend in the byway.

  1. Such beautiful images. I have to strain to think of a truly straight line in nature; I have the suspicion that it’s a man-made invention and doesn’t really exist (except maybe in fractals on a microscopic level?).

      • Yes, and delicately curved from base to tip…they look relatively straight compared to all other leaves. “The shortest distance between two points” expresses the value of efficiency which is HIGHLY over-rated by Western culture, I believe!

  2. Ah Mary…..What a wonderful journey I got to embark on through your photos. They are glorious! I don’t have to say I hope you had a great solstice, it is obvious from these pix! Glad you are so full of appreciation for life, for without it, life holds little meaning. Rejoice! Blessings…VK 🙂

  3. Beautiful post Mary and you have cultivated my curiousity about the curves that I might find in nature. I also can’t help but think of a great quote by Mae West, “Cultivate your curves – they may be dangerous but they won’t be avoided.” Peace, Harlon

    • Thank you Harlon! I’m glad you will be looking for them in Nature more now. Love the Mae West quote. Love Mae West!! I’ve known several people who imitate her quite well, and dress up like her too. 🙂
      Peace to you,

Now here we go again – I wasn’t calling you Mary! Haha!

      • Oh Mary! You made me laugh and smile and that in combination with walks in nature are the best therapy. Pride is coming up in Toronto, I wasn’t going to go, it’s a bit disheartening being to an event like that solo, but maybe I should dress up as Mae West – who knows, I may even get a date out of it (oh wait, that may not end well) but at least I’ll get to use that classic line “is that a gun in your pocket, or are you glad to see me”. Sending you giggles, Harlon

  5. Another guided meditation of pure delight, Mary; so gentle and unresisting in its unfolding expression. You asked the question of whether we find joy in the not knowing of what comes next. I had to think about that, and on balance feel that yes, I do. I don’t keep a calendar or diary, or plan events – other than very rarely – and even prefer to holiday spontaneously and in an improvised manner. For some reason, things seem to work out better for me this way, although I really don’t why it should be. More than that, such an approach seems to attract a little magic out of events, or out of chance meetings, or maybe out of the natural environment. Perhaps there’s some instinct at work that I’m not consciously aware of, and which gets to guide me in my unknowing? Anyway, I send you all best wishes, and many thanks. Hariod

    • Thank you so much Hariod! I’m with you on everything you said. I prefer to go with intuition rather than plans. It does seem more magical that way, with the little unexpected treats and chance meetings. Also, I find that the older I get, and my short term memory lessens, my intuition ramps up, thankfully. I like what you said about instinct – “which gets to guide me in my unknowing.” A wonderful comment, Hariod, for which I am deeply appreciative.

  6. Such beauty and thought in this post Mary. I enjoyed the curving reflections. Your macro photos are breathtaking. Thank you for slowing down the afternoon and sharing the goodness of this path!
I always take the unknown fork in the road or head with anticipation around the curve ahead. I am a planner of the final destination but like to let the getting there unfold.
… hhmmm I wonder what this says about our life and its journey.😎

    • Hey Val,
It’s nice you have both the plan and the flexibility to slow down and take the untraveled forks in the road, letting the journey unfold in its own way. Sometimes, for me, intuition out ranks my plan…and sometimes it’s just because I want to take the other fork, just to see around the corner! Screw the plan! Haha! It’s good, I think, to know how you travel so if you do have a plan and go off, you don’t get frustrated with yourself.
      Thanks a lot, Val.
      Peace

  13. Dear Mary
First, your photos are a sumptuous feast for the eyes and a delicacy for the mind. I call the water drops, captured by your instinctive and practiced skill with the camera , “Marydrops”. All of the Marydrops photos are exquisite. The capture of the baby oak leaf holding a drop of water is just gorgeous!!! The new growth in the tips of the pine trees , looks like a tiny hammock for fairies I love the delicate fronds of the Pasque flowers holding the tiny Marydrops, like dusters picking up the clear particles along the path. The wonderful images of reflections in the water are mesmerizing beautiful.
You opened my eyes to the beauty of the blue beetle. When you first held him up to me on your hand , I recoiled, thinking him just a black bug. Then you asked me to take a closer look and I saw the beauty of his blue wings with the black spots. He had delicate antennas and legs. He became a fellow creature full of wonder and purpose along with his beautiful covering. Thanks Mary Thank you for taking us on this delightful, heart lifting journey full of curves in the path and surprises around the turns. Of course you know I think the spider is lovely in her leggings of white. What a tremendous photo of the full moon on the first night of summer!!

  15. Hey Jenny,
Thank you for such a beautiful, generous comment! Every word was heartfelt. I love the hammock for fairies! Those new tips are so soft. And “Marydrops!” You are so sweet.

It was nice to have several rainy days in a row when the oak leaves were first coming out. So delicate, and with the drops…I could not stop clicking!

I knew you would love the spider! And the blue beetle. I remember you reluctantly letting the beetle crawl from my finger to yours, and then loving it.

Thank you for causing me to start my day with a big smile on my face. I love you.

I need to come over and see what you are up to. I have been having this freakishly weird battle with technology these last couple of months. I don’t know what is going on. Everything I try to do fails. I was lucky to get this post up. I don’t know if it is some vibration I’m putting out there, dumb not luck, astrology, or just random gremlins messing with me. Either way, I’m rarely able to get on line. I even bought a whole new computer, and it won’t go on line at all! Go figure!

Anyway, Fim, thanks for making me smile…making my day, really. ❤

  20. More lovely words and images from a heart that is always willing to share, Mary! I love so many of both here, but especially the curved leaf holding the infant drop of water, and the white spider on the Pasque flower. Your words remind me the way nature offers her bounty, too, and that it is seldom along a straight line. We respond to our heart’s calling in one way, and it leads us to another. We look for one one thing, and our searching is greeted by the unexpected– a gift even superior to what we may have imagined for ourselves, though we don’t always know it at the time… Nature’s gifts seem simple, but are endless in what they offer when we spend time with them…

Thank you for your comment. I’m glad you liked this post. Nature’s gifts really are endless. It is interesting what you said about unexpected gifts that we don’t realize are gifts at the time. I think that’s true. Most of the time I’m aware of them, but sometimes looking back, I might interpret something differently and get a whole new meaning, answer to a question or message revealed.

Always, always wonderful to see you here, Michael with your generous heart.

  24. What a beautiful post Mary, and I missed its debut.. Typical of me. Never mind here I am now. And oh so love this

To answer your question on knowing what comes next? I would sooner not know.. I have often been gifted with ‘Seeing’ a little on the horizon for others but never myself or mine.. And was told long ago to do so we would skirt around issues and not learn by sidestepping any foreseeable problems lol

” You feel the beauty so deep” Mary and you share it so well, I so loved your spheres of droplets and the seeds bursting forth with such beauty and grace.

Loved your winged birds, seeing their strength and beauty in flight and the hummingbirds feeding.
And the tiny beetle’s spots reminders of those still to be cleared imperfections which still linger upon all of our backs..

Loved your description of the lizard surrendering to the rocks of life, yet still blending perfectly with all his surroundings, we could do well to learn from him and his reflection.

Loved Father Sky and those wonderful ripples in the water along with the moons magnificence.

And thank you Mary for always being just around the corner with your beautiful comments my friend..
Sending Huge amounts of Love in your direction and thank you for sharing your wonderful gift in the form of seeing through your lens as you shared with us your beautiful photographs.

Gardening work (mine and for others) has kept me from my reader a lot since spring. I’m expecting it to ease up some now, but who knows? It is pleasant being outside, as you know, and soon enough the sun will shift and there will be more time for indoor things. 🙂

    • Hey Eliza,
Nice to hear from you. I’m glad you have your hands in the soil these days, grounding in that wonderful energy. It’s funny, I always think I am going to do indoor things in the winter and I end up really busy with shoveling snow, getting firewood, snow shoeing, playing snowball catch with my dog. Now, my brand new computer has crashed, so I am using my old one that is barely breathing. I have to have the hard drive completely erased and wiped clean – programs and everything. Grrr.
I hope the flies aren’t too bad up there. I love this stuff called Badger. It’s mostly citronella and really works, but we don’t have near the bugs you do.
Have a nice weekend, Eliza, and thanks for coming from the garden here today.
