Easter Regeneration

Today is Easter Sunday!

Yesterday, we were blessed with snow.

I got up before first light, this morning to watch the rising of the Easter sun.

What I saw first was the waning moon and the sound of hen turkeys coming down from their roost, calling to one another. I tried to be quiet, but the snow was crunchy beneath my feet. It was 17 degrees.

Though the history of Easter is fascinating,  originating thousands and thousands of years ago with the Dawn Goddess Eostre or Ishtar, my early memories of Easter were dressing up for church, and having our pictures taken. I still have those old black and whites from the 50’s with the squiggly edges.

We went to an Episcopal Church, where my mom sang in the choir. Later, we went to a larger Episcopal Cathedral, where my brother sang in the choir, before his voice changed. After college he became an organist and choir director.

This is how I remember it. This is not our church, obviously, but very similar.

This is my favorite Easter hymn.   YouTube.  I don’t know how to put the actual video here, but the link should take you there. Then push the arrow on the upper left of the YouTube screen to come back.

Easter has always been my favorite Holy Day because it makes things new. It is about renewal and rejuvenation.

Maybe we can rise too. We can at least raise our vibration to one of deep Gratitude, Love, Generosity and Happiness.

As I walk, the snow melts, some in long strings of Light, which I couldn’t catch with my camera, and some in small drops.

When I was 45, I had a bunny. Trinabinabunny.

I had her for 7 years. Every Easter morning, I would greet her with, “Happy Easter, Bunny!” I would pick her up, hold her and stroke her soft fur. Though she has been gone over 10 years, I still say it on Easter morning, as I did this morning.

It is afternoon now, and it seems like a regular day, as I sit here with a cup of Jasmine Tea. I won’t forget this morning. It filled me up. I feel new.

May you feel new today, and as we move forward into Spring, may you be blessed with Joy and Happiness as new growth blooms in your heart.

Happy Easter!

  2. Lovely photos and narrative Mary. I was just thinking today of my new Easter shoes, hat, purse and dress each year. We’d go to church in or out of town, a movie and eating out if we were out of town.

    Happy Easter and spring to you.

      Seems most of us remember something of Easter in childhood. New spring outfits! I used to hate wearing dresses, though. I just wanted dungarees and bare feet. Such a tom boy!
      Blessings and Happy Easter!

  3. I sang in an Episcopal Church choir every year since I was 7 years old – and haven’t for the last 5 years. I am not sure how to reconcile my old faith with my new thinking, but I love the music and know all the words. Thanks for this wonderful post and the blend of every way that we reverberate with the Life of Spring.

  4. Hey Priscilla,
    There is nothing like Episcopal music!! I will always love it. I even like to go to a service now and then, especially Easter, though I haven’t been to church in several years. I find that I take whatever resonates inside from anything I experience or read. Everything just flows, I think.
    Thank you for coming by and commenting. I really appreciate it. Nice to see you and Happy Easter and Spring!

  6. This may be my favorite of your posts! It is visually stunning and your words are amazing! It’s funny being the mom now. I wonder what things she will remember. She had a special dress that she was excited to wear to church but she got to change into play clothes to run and play outside with her cousins. Maybe the best of both worlds?

And before I clicked on the you tube video I had a strong feeling that was going to be the hymn. That was our opening hymn this morning at the Episcopal church where I sing in the choir. Maybe it’s the opening hymn in most churches on Easter Sunday, but still, I love these connections and that hymn. FYI, if you click share under the video, and then right click on the blue highlighted bar to copy, then you can paste it. That might work.

I’m glad you liked the water drops and Trinabinabunny. And thanks so much for the info about sharing the video! I was thinking, I should write that down, but it’s right here.! 8. Ahhhh, yes. I sang in the choir at Christ King Catholic church – 5000 pipe organ; we sang Palestrina and Bach and Mozart; often had a horn and string section with us. My voice changed and so did my mind – more directed to the earthy and less ephemeral; more real and less incorporeal; less religious and more spiritual. My voice changed to more non-theist and more spiritual and earth based. Gaia-based – all living creatures deserve the life they have been given – none may be taken without cause or honor.

    • Hey Dennis!
      I love all that good music! My brother played those huge pipe organs all over Europe and US. He was one of the greats.
      Did your mind change around the same time your voice changed? It’s a vulnerable age. I changed my mind around that age too, Met up with metaphysics at 12. Spirituality has always been really important to me. Very Gaia-based. I agree about living creatures.
      Good to see you Dennis. Thanks for your comment.

  9. Mary! What a beautiful post, full of spirit and life and breath! The pictures were divine. That red-winged bird! OML! And I love that song, too. My son Brandon was the cantor for six years at the big Catholic church in Ogden. I got so I really liked religious liturgy. He loves it, too. Couldn’t believe he got paid to do what he loved. I miss those days. (As to putting a video on here, in your add media screen it should have a place in the left column that says “Insert YouTube” and another that says “Insert From URL.” You should be able to put a video in by doing it either way.) Happy Easter, Mary, though it’s almost over…

    What a paradise you live in.
    Your photos capture the beauty and your words bring it to life in my heart.

    Here (in Japan) Easter is not celebrated, but reading your post has made me feel delight in the first breath of spring, the renewal and rejuvenation that it symbolises.

    As you say we are on a journey of renewal and rejuvenation. “Rais(ing) our vibration to one of deep Gratitude, Love, Generosity and Happiness.” Rising up to meet ourselves where we are and expand into more of our potential. Soaring in the limitless expanse of unconditional love as the beautiful bird in your picture soars in the limitless blue sky.

    This is the hope and promise your words and pictures have inspired in my heart. I thank you and send you love and gratitude.

    Gosh. This is the second time I’m seeing a red-winged blackbird! Your images are spectacular! Added with the music, and I feel this sense of majesty in the newness of Spring and Thank you, again! Your words about bunny remind me of the velveteen rabbit (It’s not really that time of year), but loving makes people and things come alive. You brought the holy to my inbox this morning (technically I had to click on your blog post because I don’t get notifications).

    My Easter came today.

    Wow. I even went to church with you this morning 😉 Did you see me wink at you, and then give you a thumbs up? I was wearing white gloves and I never do that, unless I feel like playing in the mud and getting them all played in. I will run and play a little while longer in your photos. It seems like you are always sharing gems with us.

  15. Good morning Mary,

    I couldn’t resist an afternoon stroll to blow away a few last cobwebs before the week starts in earnest in the morning, and I knew just the right place to come 🙂 Thankfully, I always wear a warm jacket and sweater or I’d be chilled to the core by now following your footsteps across the frosted ground, and catching you up to wish you a Happy Easter 😀

    From moonbeams to sunrise, from tips of tall trees flaming in morning’s fire to fire flaming in a pearl of a water, your garden wilderness wakes with such majesty and sheer delight. It’s mesmerising, and your images delightful. I’ve never seen birdsong revealed in condensing air before, and never imagined it being caught on camera! An amazing sight, and an exceptional photograph. 🙂 The blue-sky backdrop in the photograph of the bird-of-prey is unbelievably intense and just so, perfect!

    You speak of regeneration, and rejuvenation at Easter, and sweet Mother Nature delivers water in a flurry of snow to tend her parched soils and drying riverbeds. 🙂 It must bring small relief to your heart to know the land is damp again for a while and life again has a chance to prevail.

    The opening shots, particularly the second photograph of the horses plays to my memories of holidays in Dartmoor in the South West of the UK. Dartmoor is an extensive national park across thousands of acres, and home to herds of ponies. They are small in comparison to the average size horse, with long manes, tails and eyelashes, and a roundish, almost plumb stance. I find them endearing, almost cute, if that is quite the right word to use. Often the weather on Dartmoor is inclement and changes rapidly, and several times as a family we have been caught in snow showers whilst driving through or venturing back after a day out. My sister, a lover of horses and horse riding in her youth, has quite a collection of snowy day on Dartmoor photographs, and all of them with horses. She’d always be the one to get out of the car and go and rub a muzzle or slip a carrot to a friend, and in return ask for a photo. Your photograph reminds me of such happy times on Dartmoor…ponies in snow is an image that remains almost defining to me of the wildness and changeability of nature’s landscape. Happy snowy days indeed.

    I am so pleased you included an Easter Bunny! The second photo is just aww lol He/she reminds me of a beanbag toy 🙂 And Trinabinabunny…Mary, what can I say…what a beautifully sweet memory to treasure and unwrap each Easter morning 🙂 I imagine she has never left you in spirit and enjoys your wonderland with you, it looks the perfect place to rest one’s soul for a while.

    Refreshed, numb in the fingertips and nose, but warmed inside by Jasmine tea and fine company, I’m heading back across crystal-tipped hills to Dewin’s. I’ll stop on the summit and look back with a smile and trace my melting footsteps across the landscape. I think I can see your home nestled cosily between the trees in the far distance, a little snow still on the roof, and a thin wisp of smoke rising from the chimney. It’s a warmly sight. I turn and drop down over the high ridge and wind my way back home…

    Until next time Mary…take care, keep smiling, and thank you for sharing another wonderful walk with me. 🙂

    Wishing you a very Happy Easter 🙂

    • Good morning Dewin!
      It has been more than delightful having you here the last few days. Thank you for taking the time to notice all the details and joys.
      I loved hearing about you and your family on Dartmoor, your being caught in the snow there, and your sister with the horses. Do you see her these days? I can just imagine those wild plumpish prancing ponies in the snow, with their long manes, tails and eyelashes. What a wonderful memory.
      Yes, our snow is very welcome. It is good to have some moisture here. The drought is so difficult for all that live here, from frogs to kingfishers to me.
      Yes, Trinabinabunny is well missed, but I do feel her spirit here with me. She does look like a little bean bag toy! She had so much personality!! Stubborn, foot slapping, frolicking and quietly loving all in one little bunny, and a heart the size of a whole country.
      As you turn and wave goodbye for now, I am waving and smiling too, but my silent little inner voice is shouting, Noooooooo, don’t go Dewin! Come back!!!
      Thank you for another beautiful walk, my friend.
      With warmth and happy moments in my heart,
      Mary

      • Hey Mary,

        Thank you for your warm welcome and generous hospitality. The paths you unfold have me unfurling in the breeze and blooming once again in the warming spring sunshine. Always a pleasure to be here and wander your wonderland in wonder with you 🙂

        Trinabinabunny – ‘Stubborn, foot slapping, frolicking and quietly loving all in one little bunny, and a heart the size of a whole country.’ Aww, how you must have loved you so! 🙂

        I see so little of my sister these days. She lives on the other side of the UK, and whilst it is not an excessive distance away, it is a long journey to take by public transport, and time is often in great demand for both of us. We meet at points throughout the year, for birthdays and other festivities, and chat on the phone in-between. It would be great to see more of her, and more of the family as a whole of course: being so geographically dispersed across the UK makes it very awkward coordinating us all to meet in one gathering. Perhaps as the years roll forward, we’ll find ourselves moving closer to each other and benefiting from that sense of closeness again. I hope so.

        Well Mary it is time for me to ramble on…but as I turn to wave ‘adios’, not goodbye, a sheaf of paper slips from my hand and carried on the wind blows to two poems to your door to enjoy on your next breezy stroll. Thank you for your delightful company on a blustery old Easter weekend 🙂

        ~ To The Thawing Wind ~ By ~ Robert Frost ~

        Come with rain, O loud Southwester!
        Bring the singer, bring the nester;
        Give the buried flower a dream;
        Make the settled snow-bank steam;
        Find the brown beneath the white;
        But whate’er you do to-night,
        Bathe my window, make it flow,
        Melt it as the ice will go;
        Melt the glass and leave the sticks
        Like a hermit’s crucifix;
        Burst into my narrow stall;
        Swing the picture on the wall;
        Run the rattling pages o’er;
        Scatter poems on the floor;
        Turn the poet out of door.

        ~ The Wind ~ By ~ R.L. Stevenson ~

        I saw you toss the kites on high
        And blow the birds about the sky;
        And all around I heard you pass,
        Like ladies’ skirts across the grass–
        O wind, a-blowing all day long,
        O wind, that sings so loud a song!

        I saw the different things you did,
        But always you yourself you hid.
        I felt you push, I heard you call,
        I could not see yourself at all–
        O wind, a-blowing all day long,
        O wind, that sings so loud a song!

        O you that are so strong and cold,
        O blower, are you young or old?
        Are you a beast of field and tree,
        Or just a stronger child than me?
        O wind, a-blowing all day long,
        O wind, that sings so loud a song!

        Wishing you a wonderfully vibrant and energised week bursting with the colours of spring 🙂

  19. Thanks for the window into your day, Mary! It is beautiful to participate in. I was looking at the horses prancing through the snow, and the red-wing blackbird, and all of the lovely images you gathered, and realize how much Nature is a song of gladness. She is quite remarkable in that respect, and the authenticity we find there is always healing and nurturing alike. Just letting ourselves be part of that.

    I think the song you chose has that same quality. It reminded me of Easter Mass as a boy when the same would be sung, and we’d dash for the car all stoked up on hymns, while Mom and Dad wanted to “mingle” for a while. So we’d run around the parking lot and climb up trees and hide behind rocks. Basically destroy our church clothes. Eventually start arguing. Really put the home life on display in the church parking lot. I’m not sitting in the middle! Ha!

    I love the spring feel of Easter and you captured it beautifully, Mary.

      Yes, me too. I remember being stoked up on hymns and missing up my new clothes. My brother and I used to swing high on our swing set and sing hymns at the top of our lungs.
      I was reading Terry Tempest-Williams the other day, and she told a story about a crow eating a little nestling sparrow. The parents were screaming, and all the small birds of all types came around and started screaming at the crow, who calmly ate the little bird. There was nothing anyone could do, but support the parents in their grief. Then one lone song sparrow tentatively started to sing a beautiful song. The screaming began to fade, and they all started singing. I know, sad story, but in the end, it was a song of gladness. They got through the experience, surrendered to what is, and went on with it with more love for having sung together. The mirror out there is sometimes hard to see, but surrender, grace and finally gladness is in order. Being part of all that is a beautiful thing.
      Thank you Michael. It is s song of gladness.

  23. You post keeps on rejuvenating all who read, days after the holiday! The Spirit of the new season graces us through your beautiful photos, wonderful words, and excellent choral music! I marvel at your being up so early that you witness the dawning of a new day, and in 17 degrees of cold! But even as I shiver thinking of that, the images touch me with the warmth and promise of the awakening of The Mother!
    So many of them brought things to mind, like the description of how the old photographs had squiggly edges – how well I know them, and still have many of our family’s tucked away in albums.
    The water drops, oh my! The first one on the needle so reminded me of a snow globe!
    And the picture of the red winged blackbird, his breath frozen in time, brought me back to a video I’d seen of a bird where I could see it, rising, and the sense of his precious body breathing, just cloaked me in that moment of paradigm shift from mundane to truly feeling connected. And the Hawk! Just this week, on the anniversary of my mother’s crossing over, a dozen of so flew with us as we drove down to the store, and I knew today, as I knew the first time I saw them as I sat by her grave, and they told me of her new ability to speak to me through them, to let me know she was happily part of the Greater Universe!
    And you Trinabrinabunny, so gorgeous, and I could just feel what it was like to hold her body. We had a gray hare, whose name was Fluffy, though we ended up calling her Uffy. What memories! I am ever grateful to be here today, and feeling the grace of a new day, bringing rebirth our way!

    Much Love and Peace to you!

Maybe she tapped me on the shoulder and whispered in my ear to take a picture of the hawk that I think will nest here. There are 2 of them. Maybe she wanted me to show you that she can even show up on the internet! It’s nice you have that relationship with her.
      Yeah, those droplets. I had no idea how they would turn out. I was really happy when I downloaded them from my camera. That one reminds me of a snow globe too and the other one like a glass paperweight with pine needles in it and purple lines.
      I know, Trinabinabunny, right? She was so wonderful to hold and love. Just the perfect weight on my chest and stroking her years. I can still feel her. Such a special little being. I’m glad you have had a hare to love. I don’t think hares are lagamorphs like rabbits (or however you spell that). We used to have jackrabbits (hare) around, but they seem to be going away.
      I’m so glad you connected with this post, Fim. The pictures and the words. I hope your spring is being splendiferous! That must not be a real word. My computer underlined it as “wrong.” What do they know?

  25. It took me until today to read this post. It’s worth it to me to wait until I have the time and space to really take in your words and pictures. This was an especially rich offering! Thanks Mary B.!
